Scanner - higher resolution better?

I need a scanner to primarily scan photos. There are 2 I want to choose from.

The Canon Lide 4400F (£60) is cheaper and has a higher resolution. 4800x9600 dpi

The Canon Lide 500F is more expensive (£80), but has a lower resolution. 2400x4800 dpi

I want to buy the Lide 500F but would its lower resolution be a drawback or would it be more than sufficient for photo scanning?

Either would be more than good enough to scan photographs or even, if necessary, 35mm slides, but the way in which they can be used such as the 500F's folding design, plus the 440F's ability to accept a strip of six negatives, should be studied carefully.
