The Right Laptop -poweful, portable and affordable

I’m currently looking for a new laptop/netbook to take with me while I travel for around a year. I plan to take my Canon DSLR with me and shoot a lot of stills and also HD video content to document my trip. With this in mind I have decided I want to spend around £500 on a new laptop which I can use to edit and store my media.
Because I am travelling I have obvious limitations on size so I think that a 13.3” laptop will probably be the biggest size machine I want to take. I’ve spent time researching and can see that there are some reasonably powerful laptops out there that might work. The problem is I haven’t bought a new PC or laptop for about 5 years and so my knowledge is way out of date!
I see there are laptops in my size and price range with Intel Atom processors, core Duo’s, i3 and i5’s and all sorts of AMD equivalents (which I don’t know anything about). So what’s right for me??

Basic requirements:
• £500 budget
• 13.3” screen (but correct me if there is something wrong with this)
• Large HDD (320-500GB)
• Processor which can handle Media production
• HD display
• 4GB Ram
• Separate graphics card would be good!

Any help and suggestions or links to places where this has already been discussed would be appreciated!
