Replacement under warranty

I have just had reason to have a replacement for my Creative Zen MP3 player, but was surprised to find that the replacement appears to be older (judging by its S/N number and scratching of the screen) than my original player which I've returned to them. It was still under warranty and I would like to know if this is usual practice.

That they've replaced it with a refurbished model. It should, however be in as new condition so if it has a number of scratches on it I woulod reject the replacement.
