I freely admit to being a calamity Jane and not techie literate, but I use the free programme called Regseeker:

I do not know if others here use it, but it has never caused me any problems. I now have XP home, but also used it when I had Windows 98.

I have been using Regseeker for some now and never had any problems. Would definitely recommend it.
