Recovery CDs

Just a thought - some years ago I purchased a machine which only came with a recovery CD. It was running Win98 and there came a time when I wanted to use the installation disc. I got round this then by borrowing a friends original.
Just now I needed to repair IE (XPpro) by following the instructions from: click here.
How would one of the many people on this forum and beyond have been able to perform this task without the disc.

I've always found the best way to repair IE is to get a CD with it on (cover disk, magazine) and re-install it over the top of the old one. Choose 'custom install' and tick verything EXCEPT 'media player' and 'languages'.
