I have a MP3 Flash player. when I plug it into my computer via USB it disables the buttons on the player itself so it is only able to transfer/manage files or play music through the the computer. Is there anyway i can get it to work when the USB is plugged in as I want to power it through my cars cigarette lighter?

It sounds like the player isn't designed for that purpose. Most cigarette lighter adapters plug into the device's AC power socket so if your MP3 player has an AC socket where it can be plugged into the mains, you need to plug that into the lighter socket. Some devices can be plugged into the cigarette lighter via USB to be powered, but if yours disables all the buttons then it isn't designed to be powered in this way.
