I am not a happy bunny, I have just added to my music collection and have purchased a double able with copy protection. Beth Orton - Pass in Time.

Equipment - Yamaha DSPA5 & DVDS540, the CD play's but the quality is so poor it's shocking.

Has anyone else had problems with copy protected CD's?

BMG are kind enough to offer an information website where you are able to log your complaint, I await a response.

I'm getting an uncomfortable feeling that I will have to either A/ Reside myself to the fact that my current equipment will not play copy protected material, and choose to no longer purchase music. or B/ Rush to the shop's and buy suitable equipment, eg just a CD player instead of my brand new multi functional Yamaha DVDS540!!!!

Hi Tony, I think you'll agree that most labels are now placing copy protection on their Cd's and understand why. But I too use my PC as an entertainment system and expect Cd's to play with good quality sound. Tesco's, Asda's will replace/refund money on any Music CD that will not play on a PC because of copy protection, even though you have obviously opened and used same.

I would take the CD back and ask for a refund if the quality of play is as poor as you say. Regards. j.

I will await a response from the "Dedicated" team at BMG, the record label whom have implimented the copy protection. They claim to be able to resolve the problem of compatability.

Like they might send me a special un protected copy!!!! We live in hope!!!! If all else fails I will weigh up the pros & cons about my future investment in music. I don't think I would consider buying more equipment and will go down the path of DVD Music Albums for future purchases.

I will certainly keep you informed about what BMG intend to do.

Regards
T

PS - How the devil are you old man!!! I have spoken with Pete and although I am not able to set plans in stone how does Oct 14th sound!?!?!

you're assuming that the poor playback quality is because of the copy protection?

I have several copy-protected CDs and the sound quality is perfect - there's no reason why it shouldn't be, the music's digital, and the protection technology doesn't touch it.

I think you have a faulty CD, and perhaps you should return it. I assume you have played other CDs on your "brand new multi functional Yamaha DVDS540" without any problem?

Take it back - voting with our feet is our only weapon in fighting this nonsense.

Excellent. But as you know most dates are fine with me, unless I get a last minute call to the Hospital. j

FE, I have also played the CD in the car. It works fine. I am by know means fully coherent about how copy protection works, hense my prompt submission to the BMG specialists.

I can only speculate what the outcome will be. I will cross fingers & hope they have a method for allowing disks to play on mutli functional equipment. That is probably the issue. I do know that higher end models have dual lasers, but alas not this one.

release a protected and an unprotected version (I think it might have been Natalie Imbruglia who had two versions released, but don't quote me on that). What the point of protecting in the first place was when an unprotected version was released too, I don't know.

Anyway, the protected discs refused to play on PC's and DVD players, I recieved the New Iron Maiden album a couple of days ago, it's copy protected but will play fine on my PC, it seems the protections have advanced a bit over the last few months. wait a few more months and you'll probably find that you can play anything on anything again, even though the protection is still there.

The CD has been returned to ASDA for a refund. BMG suggested I purchase futher HIFI equipment to listen to the CD at home. Suggesting that the Yamaha CD/MP3/DVD was to blame for the fault. As I pointed out to BMG this will directly effect my purchases in future.

Tony
