New to this game so I thought i'd rack the collective brain of this forum.

Can I get some recommendations of tried and tested places to shop from? I'd like some comprehensive advice from the sales crew so if anyone has had good experiences anywhere please let me know.

Need a desktop pc;
-very quiet,
-as fast as possible,
-able to cope with multiple tasks ie -streaming/recording audio,
-ripping/burning DVDs,
-downloading films/music,
-basic music editing
-watching films,
-transfering films/music etc
-will last the next 5 years or so

Cheers

Some questions....

- What's your budget?
- Do you need a monitor?
- Are you going to be playing the latest games?
- Would you consider building it yourself? This way you could choose your own quiet case & PSU

Minimum I'd go for to be quiet, quick, do all that you require & 'last 5 years' (debateable!):

- Q6600 quad-core CPU
- 2-3Gb 800Mhz DDR2 RAM* (4Gb if 64-bit OS)
- 500GB hard disk*
- 2x DVD-rewriters (one as a backup)
- Quiet case & PSU
- 8400GS 256Mb graphics card/ATi equivalent
- 22-24" TFT monitor
- Possibly an external hard disk & imaging software for general/OS backup

*More can be easily be added in the future if required.

If you're on a limited budget you may need to cut back on some of the components. Also, if playing the latest games, you'll need to spend around £150 on a graphics card now (this will probably need to be upgraded 1-3 times in 5 years if you want to keep up with the latest games). G
