OK. It's a low specification machine and runs Linux, but is this the start of things to come? It is after all, about £100 cheaper than a model installed with Windows.

I seem to remember when Walmart in the USA launched a similar offering, it proved to be popular.

It's ok but Dell regularly offer similar priced machines with a slightly higher spec.

I'm not sure that many people are ready for linux yet.

£100?? the dell is only 15 quid dearer and the PCWorld one is £40 more. Both run XP and have dvd rewriters, the Linux one doesn't.

You have to be careful with the Dell offerings. Note the "From" price, which is for a base model only and as far as I can see, does not include a DVD writer.

I have to admit though, I did not realise that such cheap machines are now available and when I said "about £100 cheaper" was referring to similar laptops at e-buyer. The PC World Advent looks particularly good value.

The Dell Inspiron 1300 is available with a DVD writer ad XP for £288.47 inc vat and delivery.
