I have a KM4M-V motherboard which needs replacing. The market of motherboards is a minefield, where do I start? Thanks

All depends on what you use your computer for, want you intend to use it for, and how much you want to spend.

To cut down on what there is out there and I assume you're using what you have already in the way of processor, memory type and graphics card AGP or PCI Express and if you list those three things you can immediatly wipe at least three quarters of all the motherboards out.
Example if you have Socket A processor you only need to look at Scket A boards, if you have an AGP card that cuts it down more in that you're looking for Socket A with an AGP slot etc.

i'd recommend getting a fanless heat-pipe silent one

I don't think older motherboards come with this feature. And if they did, wouldn't that put an unnecessary premium on the price? G
