laptop-mouse-pad not working

I have a somewhat dated laptop that is an unknown clone, the supplier is no more and now the mouse-pad doesn't work, or buttons either side. It started when I removed a "trackball" plus driver software from its socket at the rear, Is this likely to be a motherboard problem or can I re-install the mouse-pad. The machine is usable via a plug-in ps2 basic mouse.

It could be a Synaptics touch pad, in that case try click here. Another idea is to run the add hardware wizard from control panel.

There is just a chance that reloading this may reinvigorate the parts!
