I'm looking at laptops around the £1,000 mark.

Tiny's £999 job recommended here seems good. AJP also seem good (big package of features), but if its service standards are as bad as its website (which has got to be the worst I have ever seen) then I'll not bother. Dell seems expensive for what you get, but have a reputation for reliability (good enough for the military!). MESH seems expensive and has a poor service reputation in some quarters. One or two others seem promising (ACER and NOVATECH) but I don't really know the companies and have concerns about buying from such.

I am not bothered by weight and battery power. I want 1024 and a decent chip plus 128 graphics. I definitely want a reliable and fairly priced warranty.

Any help would be much appreciated.

on whether or not you like a company's website doesn't seem like a particularly logical way to go about it, but you're the one who has to make the decision.

What you need to bear in mind is that most companies don't make the laptops themselves - they buy in the chassis and compinents from one of the giant Taiwanese laptop manufacturers and build the cases onto them. The machines are badged, software installed, and sold as branded goods. There's no disadvantage to this process - the Taiwan makers are the world's specialists when it comes to laptops, and make many millions of machines a year.

Take care to look at the specifications of the machines in your budget bracket, and you'll see that they are all quite similar. Software bundles might vary, and of course different vendors have different customer service plans. The vast majority of the laptops sold work perfectly, and continue to do so for a long time - you're very unlikely to need any customer service at all after the intial purchase.

My laptop's a rebadged Taiwanese laptop. A FIC A360+. However, when a problem arose, the company from whom I bought it from (who'll remain nameless) said that the laptop is not their responsibility because they did not make it and that I should contact the original manufacturer who gave no reply.

I think Acer is a "safer" brand name to choose. As far as I know, they don't rebadge laptops that are available under other brand names. The Acer web site has an E-mail Support option, and also technical helpline should you encounter problems (its 50p per min though). If you want more warranty click here may help.

The point I was making is that millions of laptops are made in Taiwan - not by the companies from which you eventually buy them. Hewlett Packard laptops are Taiwan-manufactured for instance. There's nothing wrong about this, the Taiwan manufacturers lead the world in laptop technology. Usually the machines are made to a vendor's specifications. The Chassis comes over with all the components on board and the vendor company assembles the case and badges it.

Forum editor-to me a company that can't put together a decent website can't be relied upon to provide after sales support. The quality of the original product I agree is almost to be taken for granted-but any company in any sphere is judged by their reaction when things go wrong, and sloppy presentation is indicative of sloppiness in other areas (although not a guarantee).
