Laptop advice needed please ?????

Hello, I am planning on buying a new laptop, but am quite clueless, so i'm looking for advice. I will only be using it for pretty basic stuff, i.e. checking email, basic microsoft office functions, surfing the internet, managing my ipod, downloading some music etc, however I would like it to be able to do all the above reasonably well and not have too many problems with speed/storage/battery life etc. Can anyone advise a decent laptop to buy? Or what I should be looking for in a laptop? I wouldn't want to spend more than £500. I currently have a dell inspiron and was considering going for another Dell, but wasn't sure as the battery on my current Dell stopped working after about 18 months. Thanks
