iPod - am I limited to iTunes?

I'm considering asking Father Christmas for an iPod this year, but as a complete newbie to downloadable music I might be asking a really stupid question here. Can I only download music or audio books from iTunes with an iPod? Will I be able to rip the music from some of my existing CDs and store them on my iPod, or will I have to purchase them again from iTunes?

iTunes will rip your Cd's and then put them on your iPod.

There are other programs that can work with an iPod but iTunes is an extremely good application that is designed to make syncing with the iPod very easy.

If you intend to buy and download music, you will have to use iTunes, as no other service is compatible with the ipod. CDs will be fine, as Monument says
