Is HP's 6 colour ink worth it?

I am considering the HP5650 at PCWorld for £100 for getting good quality printing with its photo cartridge.

But the Canon I850 is also on offer at PCW for £100 (£150ish at dabs and normally £170 at PCW).

So am I better off having a £100 printer with photo cartridge or £170 £'s worth of printer for £100, but without photo cartridge?

While the HP 5650 is an excellent printer. The Canon i850 is outstanding and the better buy. [I have 7350 and i850 at the moment] Cannon is quicker and quieter, prints are as good, Text is much better.

Only reason for the drop in price of the Canon, new model released, but would still choose the i850, even at it's original price. j.

Djohn is right.Separate visible ink-levels clinch it. But I'd like like someone good at ferreting to find price/availability of a spare head, especially if it might go out of production.

We had this thread before click here but I never found out if it really did use six colours or in fact swapped carts for photos. My family has an HP2210 and it gobbled up a photo cartridge (HP58) far too quick to consider buying another.

The new model (i865) which replaces the Canon i850 has 5 cartridges, ie. an extra black for improved photographs. See the web site: photo-i for the latest reviews.

The canon i865 is the printer for me after reading the photoi report. There is a new
pc world opening near me shortly and I'm
hoping for a bargin on opening day.

click here for full review of i850. Heads can be bought separate and fitted by user. prints 6x4 border-less prints.

Another nice touch to the i850 is that you can leave it turned off. When you click on any print icon from within windows the printer turns on automatically, then turns off again when finished printing. The turn off delay can be set from one minute to thirty minutes, or thereabouts. j.
