I have been looking for a new graphic card with a limited budget.

Which would be better:-

256mb of memory with a slower processor

128 of memory with a faster processor

what is your budget, and what are you looking into buying nvidia or ati and if you can nail down any ones you like the sound of?

Also maybe cloase this thread and move it to the helproom. You will get more replies there.

256mb of memory with a slower processor - you can overclock the processor

sorry have to disagree. A 128MB 9800 pro is much faster than a 256MB 9600

Agree with [email protected] - just look at the benchmarks on tom's hardware guide - the extra memory makes little or no difference in performance, the GPU is the most important thing so buy the best you can.

The speed will give better framerates, but with more memory, there is more space for textures to be cached into, meaning that it doesn't have to read the HDD as much.

Best thing to do is to go for somewhere in the middle.

That is really all the memory does, so like the guys do, get 128Mb with a good CPU. My 5900XT 128Mb hasn't let me down yet. :)

gmcneely. My friend we need more info before you can get quality advice. These forums have good folk wanting to help so fill us in with your computer info and requirements and let the lads do their bit. If you want to do you own homework then click here is excellent. They recommend either the Radeon 9800 Pro or the 5900XT with your budget in mind. As posted before it depends on your requirements and system. Hope that helps.

Wow thank you all. Your views & opinions are gratefully recieved. I think I've got an idea in which direction I be looking, but heres the answers to your questions:-

Windows-XP
AMD 3000pro built into a ECS L7VMM3

Thinking NVidia card {same as current card)

General use including some gameplay (which is probably the main reason for considering the upgrade).
