Getting tech wise

Can anyone reccomend me how I can get up to date, and understand what components I should be using with what.
I have previously put together a pc on my own, although I required coming on here and asking for a spec as I don't really have the foggiest.
Would the suggestion be to look at already prebuilding sites and coping specs?

As I want a new pc for the ability to player games, and also for my piano/guitar to plug into.

click here is a good guide for building a gaming PC, it is a USA site in that the recommended suppliers are all based in the States but most of the parts will be available over here.
