i have a packard bell sempron 3000+ laptop with 40gb internal h/drive.

i want to copy old 8mm camcorder film to dvd. would this be a good buy?

also what is best hardware/software link from camcorder to laptop?

That will be fine as regards storage. Does it connect via USB2?

You will also need a lot of RAM - 512mb as a minimum; 1GB preferably.

Can't help re. hardware for the process though.

Thanks, Diodorus.

It does connect via USB2. I recently added 512mb to existing 256mb RAM. So it sounds ok.

Imho - you should consider forgetting about copying these via PC and purchase a standalone DVD recorder instead. This will allow you to copy in real time rather than the hours of processing time it takes on PC although you wouldn't have the same editing functionality. I bought a cheap Cyberhome one from Asda for £67 which does this beautifully.

That's a good idea. I initially want to do a backup of all the tapes going back over the years before they start to go off. that might be the best route for starters.

it could also help me copy semi-edited vhs home movies.

Thanks,
