Contacting Internet in Europe by mobile?

I travel around Europe by motorcaravan, sometimes for several months at a time. I have various interests with which I like to keep in contact when I am away. In the past I have used a mobile 'phone connected to a laptop, this is terribly slow (9,600) and consequently quite expensive and not really practical for web use.
I do not want or need all the bells and whistles that seem to come on the latest 'phones.
My question is, what is the most economical and straight forward way to keep in contact these days? My laptop still performs quite well. Cyber cafes are not an option. Is GPRS readilly available and if so, any views?
I do not mind paying reasonably for what I use but do not want to be hooked into an expensive contract unnecessarilly.
