Conficker Worm removal

I am going to visit one of my flock on Monday who is in a state of fear and trembling because he has been informed his machine is infected with the Conficker Worm.
He has tried Googling various remedies but each time one he has tried so far has carried out a scan, confirmed the infection and then want him to sign up for lots of dosh for the removal download

So I there a FREE item to download that I can put on a stick to take with me on Monday?

Is a virus that, admittedly, I don't know an awful lot about. What I would question though is what makes him think that he has it? Does he actually have it or does he simply have some malware producing fake popups claiming his computer is infected in an attempt to get him to spend money on a (probably useless) virus removal tool.

If he has an anti-virus then that will tell him whether he has it or not and most probably remove it if he has.
