Recommendations for a computer to be used by a small accountancy firm using various accounts packages - we need speed and most of reliability

Thanks

Any new pc will meet your needs.

You dont want fast graphics becoause you are not playing games so 128mb will suffice. The usual 80GB HDD will be ok, make sure it has an ethernet connection for either broadband or networking. A TFT would suit you better than a CRT as it doesnt flicker.

It now depends on how much you want to spend ????

Go into PCWorld and buy any computer for around £500 (with TFT)and integrated graphics will be more than adequate. The Compaqs and Emachines are very good. You will NOT need huge specs but a CD writer may be handy for backing up (most comouters have these). It is unlikely that you will need a DVD writer.

with both previous responses.

Don't worry too much about branding - pretty well everyone makes a basic business machine, and if you go to a PC World business centre you should be offered several for around £500/600, although you might have to add the cost of an Office suite. Your ideal computer would come with:-

Athlon processor
Windows XP Professional
Microsoft Office 2003 Professional
512Mb RAM
80Gb hard drive
CD writer
LAN port
Multiple USB ports
TFT screen (17")

and anything else that's included.

Don't buy any extended warranties, but definitely buy a TFT screen.

Well 6+ years anyway.

I would contact the ACA or whatever body you are affiliated to.

CD's are probably not a sufficiently reliable method of archiving Client Accounts, but they should be able to give you the current wisdom.
