Classified Ads

Looking for a decent local classified ads site.

Most of the national companies seem to have local sites, but any recommendations?

This is an area where my local newspapers are no longer major players.

Depends on what you want to advertise. Your local library might have an answer.

Sorry, I failed to make myself clear.

I can find many classified ads sites.

I am looking for personal recommendations.

It depends what you want to buy/sell.
Exchange and mart is a good general one click here. but if it is an unusual 'objet d'art' then find a specialist site.

Thanks, but I'm looking for local coverage, the sort of area that used to be covered by the local paper.

Things like prams, cd players, bikes etc.

"the sort of area that used to be covered by the local paper." In most areas the local paper is published on-line and even though they are often part of a group they still have local ads.
Where I live we also have a free Friday-Ad click here both online and it can be picked up from some shops - ask at your postoffice or newsagent.

Can you recommend this site? As I said, I can find lots of sites but I'm looking for personal recommendations.

Don't think the library or newsagent will hold water in my area. The local newsagent is mainly staffed by older ladies and without being sexist or ageist (I'm over 70 myself) and I can't see them knowing much about local internet sites, and while the library may be OK for genealogy sites and the like I don't think classified ads lie within their purview!

Yes. I use it to advertise vacancies at my stables a couple of times a year. The print version comes out weekly, and you can choose what area of the country you want your advert to appear in or it can go national.

I have used Gumtree to sell small value items.

But you have to be prepared for strange phone calls. They started when I was placing ads and have stopped since.

A typical one suggests that the computer is running slow and if I go to the keyboard whilst they are on the phone, they'll talk me through the remedy.

Others suggest that I meet up somewhere with the goods I'm selling, but show little interest in enquiring over their condition etc.
