What games will you be playing? This is likely to be the main determining factor in choosing the right one because a laptop with decent graphics is likely to have a good overall spec too & so will do almost anything else you need. Get one with the best graphics you can afford as this is not usually upgradable in the majority of laptops. Another downside with good laptops graphics is that it's the one thing that can raise the overall price considerably, so for £500 you could be disappointed with the graphics you end up with.

For a start, have a look at these links, which are to do with laptops graphics performance with respect to games: click here

games will more than likely be more processor intensive..

i.e football manager and the total war series of games..

any suggestions?

I would pose your query regarding Total Wars at click here. Before posting, see the 1st post in the 'Can my notebook run it' thread click here, & post in the same thread.

Ask for evaluations of these 2 laptops - best I could find for the money. I think the 1st one will be the better of the two: better CPU + GPU + resolution, although 1Gb RAM less & lower HD space:

HP G72-130sa (click here £510)
CPU: Intel® Core™ i3 Processor i3-330M 2.13 GHz
GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5430 Graphics
RAM: 3GB DDR3 (1x1Gb + 1x2Gb)
Display (resolution): 1600 x 900

HP Pavilion DV6 (click here £520)
CPU: AMD Turion™ II Ultra Dual-Core Processor M620 2.5 GHz
GPU: ATI Radeon™ HD 4530 Graphics
RAM: 4GB DDR2 (2x2Gb)
Display (resolution): 1366 x 768

Laptop CPU benchmark list click here, if you ever need to compare their performance.

All the best, G
