This story sounds familiar. My laptop’s hinge is broken. TechGuys collected the laptop at the end of November 2007. I paid the initial fee of £120 on the 26th of Nov. then on the 3rd of Dec. I was called to pay parts fee (£106.97). I was told it will take around 10 days, but I have not seen my laptop since!
At the beginning they said that they have the parts but the workshop has not started working on the laptop because of miscommunication between them and the workshop, and the workshop was not aware that I had paid the parts fee. They admitted it was their mistake. They continued telling me this again and again for around 10 days. Then just before Christmas, I was told that they are working on the laptop and it should be finished within few days.
As I have not heard, I contacted them early in the New Year, and now the story changed. They told me that they are still waiting parts and the work has not started yet. Since then they promised me several times that they will completed the work in days, they even told me specific delivery date on one occasion.
The last thing is that they are still awaiting parts (from abroad), and they do not know when they will arrive.
Just one note is that the same problem happened to this laptop 1 year ago when it was still within warranty, and TechGuys repaired it (free of charge) and returned the laptop within 2 weeks, so I am not sure what is happening now.
The problem is that I use my laptop form medical research, and this delay has affected my projects significantly.

ShJa I agree with Jack and lisa02's comments wholeheartedly. Insist that they return your laptop and cash immediately because I for one smell a rat, if it were my laptop I would start to think they had lost it, at least if it's returned to you, you can go somewhere else and get it sorted out and for a lot cheaper than they charge too.
For what you paid, I'm sure you could have found a specialist independent repairer with a fast-turnaround service. I'm fortunate to have always purchased very durable notebooks, but if I had to get one fixed, I would expect prompt service and preferably get it fixed by an agreed date. If a repairer has its concession contract to fall back on, it perhaps won't feel such a need to provide A1 service and keep the customers 100% happy.
