Amazon packaging a bit excessive!

My daughter received today a cardboard parcel from Amazon measuring about 16" X 13" X 7". Inside was bubble wrap etc. and another parcel about 12" X 9" X 4". Inside this was a bubble wrapped click here which measures about 5" X 3". Thanks for taking so much care Amazon but think of the planet a bit more please. Oh and it was free delivery!

Because of the large number of packages sent out from the warehouse they probably use only a few sizes of boxs (but lots of them) and make the volume up with bubblewrap. They may also require suppliers to supply in 'std' size boxes.

As wiz king says its often a case of standard size boxes. I often order stuff from Westafalia

and the size of the boxes rarely bears any relationship to the size of the items inside. They don't use much in the way of bubblewrap however, they tend to use crumpled recycled(?) paper as packaging.

If the products come from Amazon's main warehouse the wrappings are cut to size & folded around the package.

If they come from one of the smaller warehouses, or a third party, then as others said, they will only have a few sizes of boxes.

In all cases the common sense rule applies - as Amazon are paying for it, they will always choose the smallest possible box. Obviously bigger boxes cost more, but also couriers charge by both size & weight, so the delivery charge will be unnecessarily inflated if they use a too large box.

Amazon is trying to sort out the problem with packaging.
