advice for laptop purchace????

I brought compaq presario from pc world 2 years ago. It was slow, awfully built, broke down repeatedly and ive finally had enough!

I want to buy a new laptop, but not online simply i like to deal face to face.
I have a budget of £550. All i want is decent performance that wont leave me waiting for half an hour for a program to load, good screen and reliability (im writing a book so good keyboard is important).
Dvd-r/rw would be nice but not life or death and batterylife is always a plus.

any advice would be great!!! thanks

Take your money to PCW get your hands on the lappies and get a feel for them. With current deals you should have a good bit of change. The advent models are well priced.

advent ive been warned about by my work collegues, a few have them and have been appaled over the long term.

Family member has a lappy with a C3 and it's pants. Look at these dells, only thing is you can't deal face to face. But the value and the company can't be beaten. click here

Pentium M 1.5Ghz and least and 512mb RAM is my recommendation.

1.5 sounds good, its definatly to be considered.

celeron is a cut down (budget) version of a pentium. semperon is AMD's budget competitor for the celeron.

the dell in my link at £399 delivered is an absolute bargain.

I've just bought an Acer Laptop and so far I'm very pleased with it.

Like you I wanted to see / touch / use the product before I laid out my hard earned money, and I did try many computers before deciding on the Acer.

I bought mine from a company in Huddersfield who seem to specialise in Acer (see the link above), their prices are very keen. However, if you don't live near Huddersfield (and even if you do) try a few of your local Comet outlets, I found that they tend to stack a decent range of Acer Laptops, it should give you a chance to access them and see if they will meet your needs...

It's also worth having a look around PC World (as SG Atlantis suggested) if only to get an idea of what's available for the money..

Good luck,
