Wireless stuff, Mac books and other bits.

I'm going to bin my really old computer and buy myself a laptop, most likly a macbook as I use the girlfreinds and It seems really good.

I assume wireless means just that, so i can use the laptop anywhere in the house, I really am a novice when it comes to this sort of stuff, so I'm looking for help.
I currently have a "speed touch modem" which BT gave me as part of there broadband package, do I keep this. Also what else other than the laptop would I need to buy, would I need a "Airport extreme base station" or "airport Express base station". There's a big price difference so all you advice would be greatly appreciated.
