USB External HD and a Mac.

A friend of mine has a Mac Laptop and I am going to by a USB external backup drive as a Birthday present. I am wondering how to format it on a Mac. I suppose that it is possible.

The Mac's "Disk Utility" will format an external USB drive. The Mac will also read a drive formatted as FAT32.

The Mac will also boot from an external drive, but it needs to connect by Firewire rather than USB. I don't know if that's an option. I used an external drive enclosure with Firewire/USB connectivity and installed a standard IDE 3½" drive in it.
