Running Windows on on Macbook

I installed Windows 7 on my Macbook about 9 months ago and use it through Bootcamp.

My only issue is that I have everything stored on the Mac hard drive and only use Windows for 2 pieces of software that I need running throughout the day.

I want to be able to have the software running on windows and be able to flick back and forth between the 2 OS without having to shut one down.

I know there are companies selling stuff for me to be able to do this (Parallels and VMWare), but I'm not sure what I need.

A friend said for me to use VMWare Player software, which is free.

Would this work?

Both Parallels and VMWare create a virtual windows pc within the Mac OS. I understand Parallels works better on a Mac.

I am not sure if Parallels is free.

Virtualbox is free and here is a link to it click here run Linux as host system with various windows virtual installations.
