Refund from Apple

In May I ordered an i-pad online and paid £700 from my debit account to them, this was taken out of my account immediately btw.
On visiting the Manchester store on the 1st June they had ipads for sale so the assistant with my say so cancelled the online order and I purchased the ipad in the shop, now I cannot get the original money back into my account,
Apple say they released the money on the 10th June and to get in touch with my bank which I have done, they say they don't have a holding area etc. and if Apple had paid money into my account it would be there which it isn't. Basically I'm going from one to the other each one telling me to get in touch with the other, I am now at a total loss as to what to do and any advice would be much appreciated.

I would never make a purchase with a debit card for an item of this type, because you have more security and protection in using a credit card, under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act.
