I have win xp and lately it will not shut down in the usual way. It gets past the logging off screen, and then says windows is shutting down and hangs there. I have to use the power button.
I have not added or removed anything for some time and it shut down normally until recently.

Can anyone help please?

Don

I also get this - quite often. I give it a minute or so then switch the system off at the wall socket. However, I would like to solve the problem properly ...

My computer does this on occasion by pressing ctrl/alt/delete it will fetch the Windows Task Manager up, click on user and Log Off and it will indicate which programs are not responding. Take note on these programs and if possible re-install them after a restart. Once logged off either shut the computer down or restart.
