  philadelphia 22:40 30 Jun 03

when the correct shutdown procedure is used, the machine does not close all programs and switch off. it closes windows and then reboots and presents me with the mesage that it was incorrectly shut down and runs scandisk. i'm running xp home.

Go into msconfig and disable all except Explorer and System tray to see if it will close down. If it does enable one item at a time until it stop's again you will then know what the prob is

Tell him where to look for msconfig in XP, While I have a look at your link

  woodchip 23:10 30 Jun 03

Well that makes it easy, It's not gone that far then from Win9

Nope, its the same:

Start, Run, enter msconfig and OK.

Dare I suggest that you try XP - it's a bit tellytubbies in appearance at first but incredibly stable (until things go wrong of course).

Sorry philadelphia for hijacking your thread to indulge in a bit of chit-chat. Just ignore the irrelevant posts.
