Macbook track pad sticks, need workaround

The mouse/trackpad on my 2006-era Macbook sticks and freezes up -- both the trackpad part and the companion bar below it. Any ideas on workarounds/repairs I can try myself would be appreciated. I can barely use the thing anymore, and while it's no longer my main computer, it has a massive iTunes library that I like to stream wirelessly to other devices. I've kept the white keyboard pristine, always touching it only with clean hands so am doubting it's a dust/crumbs issue. thanks in advance.

Get a wired or bluetooth mouse and use that instead.
