I have been given a gift of a new SEAGATE 400GB EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE with Push Button Backup, USB & FIREWIRE Ports, for PC or MAC.

I have both a MAC runnig OS Tiger, and a PC running Windows XP Professions SP2.

Would be grateful if someone would help me on how to connect (format?) this unit so I can simply use it as a backup for both these platforms? I wish to be able to plug into the PC to back up, and then the MAC also.

Unit arrived from overseas without a manual (I am in Africa, Missionary)

Thanks for assistance

if both machines have usb ports you should be able to just plug the drive into each in turn and it should be recognised. If so just create 2 folders on it 1 for the mac stuff and the other for the pc and simply right click the files you wish to copy and then paste them in the correct folder. You can of course also make additional folders on the hard drive and within folders. Most external drives I have come across do not need to be formatted.
