how to stop pharmacy emails

  jarani 22:51 14 Apr 06

could anyone please advise me on how to stop these peske emails which advertise valium, viagra etc with promises of what they would do, of which i get up to half a dozen a day, at different times of the day, each addressed to me correctly but with subtle changes of jumbled source letters which my filters do not stop - I have children using the computer and find them embarassing in the extreme - jarani

Apart from changing your email address, never visiting any sites which might be even slightly dodgy, never entering your email address in an online form, and ensuring that your email address doesn't appear anywhere on a web site.

thank you Forum Editor - I have never to my knowledge either looked up any dodgy sites or knowingly disclosed my email to anyone - do these people never stop ? - i am with wanadoo where the family address is hard to change unless you adopt a false name and this may need to be done - jarani

Switch to Mozilla Thunderbird and "train" its Junk filter to get them immediately diverted to the Junk folder. All you need to do then is delete the folder occasionally.

Thunderbird has the means to describe e-mails as Junk or Not Junk, so it quickly "learns" which ones to divert.

If you use Outlook Express, you can export its settings to Thunderbird once the latter has been installed.

have more than one email address, and use a specific address for online forms, ordering items online, enrolling for newsletters etc.

The other address is used exclusively for friends and family emails, with a request that the address is never passed on in any way. Ask your close friends and family members never to include you in one of those round robin mails that seem to circulate amongst groups of friends or colleagues - jokes and so on. Unless you're strict about this you'll find that your address is appearing on huge circulation lists, with the inevitable result.

When you set up this special, private address, make sure that it's with a reputable source, and select an unusual name - [email protected] will soon be receiving an avalanche of spam.

i find in addition that so few people make little use of the bcc facility when forwarding stuff etc and exposing so many others to spam

Johnny - sorry to be out of touch, but what is bcc facility ? - jarani

  johnnyrocker 23:47 14 Apr 06

it is called blind carbo copy and people addressed by this means do not get to see who else the mail was sent to the facility is available in hotmail and i believe in all mailing facilities, can reduce spam considerably.
