Games machine

As one or two of you will know I don't do games but I have to build one for my son. What are the required specs to run the latest games and any recommendations welcome on where to get 'em.

Depending on budget for one that would last a year i would say;

P4 2.8ghz OR AMD 64 3000+ - AMD Socket 939 is best as A64 do best at games and the 939 sockets give best upgrade route

512mb RAM+ - atleast 512 mb RAM if not 1024mb would be better but then that is the easiest upgrade so can do it later.

9800pro or 9700pro GFX card - Dont know about the new PCI or Geforce cards but these run games fine for me even Doom3 at Medium settings!
