External SATA drive on Vista machine

I'm running a Vist Home Premium machine and have added a SATA external hard drive that connects by a supplied SATA card. It runs fine if I remember to switch it on prior to booting the PC, but if forget and power it up while Vista is running it isn't recognised and I have to reboot. Is there a way of getting Vista to 'see it' when I switch it on?

Disk Management - under right click - Computer - rescan: this is the only way I've found - but its easier to switch everything on at the same time :)

That's a good enough work around for me!
