External optical drive for cd's or dvds

Have got a late 2010 iMac with an internal optical drive. Recently it has been playing up , so i went to see how much it was going to cost to replace it. Mean while i have invested in a external cd drive . It is a Proxima direct dvdrw USB2.0. It has arrived , but i cannot get the computer to recognise it , i have read several articles on how to get it to work , and these include going into the terminal with several commands( although if there is some new ones i am willing to give them a try). Have checked the cd/dvd sharing box and have done several other things as well. Before i send it back to Amazon , i just want to check i haven't missed anything. I will eventually be having a internal one installed , so it isn't a major thing if i cannot get one to work on my system.

thank you. Ray.
