I have a spreadsheet (2003) that has 3 columns:
COL 1: Label FullName
COL2: label Firstname
COL3: label LastName

Col 1 is populated with firstname space> lastname and I want to populate cols 2 & 3 automatically from existing data.

I need exact step by step help - I've never done anything like this!

Where is the data - do you mean you want to use column one and split the first name from last name?

If column A has your fullnames and column B you want toextract first name from col A and likewise you want to extract last name also from col A, then follow this:-

If A1 = 'Firstname Lastname' then in B1 copy/paste
=LEFT(A1,FIND(" ",A1)-1)

in C1 copy/paste =RIGHT(A1,LEN(A1)-FIND(" ",A1))

click and drag down your columns.

"and likewise you want to extract last name also from col A" should read
"and likewise in column C you want to extract last name also from col A"

Select column A, Data > Text to Columns, specify Delimited with Space as the delimiter.

Nice one Picklefactory! I have combined two columns using concatenate before but not split one into two like that, very useful

Oh yeah. Doh!
I always have a wonderful knack of missing the bleedin' obvious. Never gave that a thought.
