Apple's reputation takes a knock

That's the heading of a PCadvisor artilce. Apple took a knock from me when my daughter bought a iPod and after 6 months it failed to work. Apple seem more concerend with nice rather than reliable design. Put me off Apple for a while.

They're becoming more mainstream that's all.

They were once elitist, well that was the attitude if their loyal following, but that's no more as sales rise so does the customer base.

If you consider faults as a (small?) % of units sold, then it's simple to work out that if they sell more then there'll be an increase in faults as well.

from the psots i'ver seen and anecdotes fo others Apple iPODs suffer more faults as a percentage than other MP3, but maybe the popularity is responsible for the prominence of faulty ones.
