We currently use XP PC's at home. My daughter starts uni next year and I leaning towards buying an Apple Mac.

My question is this, can you copy a folder from the mac to a portable hard drive that is formated for windows NTFS, and visa versa, and then work with the folder contents on both units?

You can use an external drive with both Mac and Windows if it is formatted as FAT32 - the Mac won't be able to use a drive formatted as NTFS.

Windows XP, Vista and 7 can all use a FAT32 external drive, even if their own operating system is in an NTFS drive.

A Mac can read and NTFS dive but it can not natively wite to it.

With MacFuse click here that problem is remedied.

Windows 7 can now read and write to an HFS+ drive. On my systems with W7 on a bootcamp partition, I see the MAC drive in Windows explorer.
