apple mac air..forgot password

hi all, my son in law has a new apple mac air laptop..he has used it for a few days but now he cannot get past his log in window as he has forgotten his password...could someone please advise as to how he can now get past this..he obviously doeas not want to lose any of his information etc...is there a way to reset his password...i personally have no idea as i use a windows 7 laptop...so if someone could advise it would be greatly appreciated...many thanks in advance

As suggested in those LINKS you may have to take it into an Apple Store with Proof of Purchase if you fail to rectify it by your own means and there may be a charge for that. Good Luck.

Thank you for the help northumbria ...sorted the password problem,he was trying the wrong password but thanks to following the advice in the links you posted we discovered the correct password,now all is fine...many thanks once again
