The five best apps for working on the go

Free downloads to help you on the move

These days working on the go is a regular occurrence for many of us. However, there's nothing more frustrating than finding you don't have the file you need, or your net connection has dropped so you can't view an email you desperately need to refer to in Gmail. Fear not, here's five free downloads to help make working on the go a smooth process.

Joli OS 1.2

Jolicloud is a free service that basically lets you organise and access all your favourite web apps, folders and feeds from one central location.

There's a standalone ISO file (choose the Linux option above) that you can download, burn to disc and then use to install Joli OS on a computer with no operating system. For the rest of us, however, the Windows installer does just fine. It installs Joli OS into its own folder on your boot drive, then adds an option to boot into Joli OS to the Windows boot menu.

CloudMagic 2.60 Beta for Chrome

CloudMagic is a free browser extension that indexes your Google Mail and Docs to provide a super-fast search facility in its own pop-up window (just click its browser icon), which won't disrupt your use of either service.

Once installed, log into your Google Account through the web page that appears: don't worry, this is all stored offline on your computer, so no sensitive information is transferred anywhere. Once logged in – and you can use multiple accounts if you have them – CloudMagic will start to index the contents of your Google account. Wait a few minutes, then try it out: type your search term and the results will instantly start to appear, divided into three tabs: Mail, Docs and Contacts. Click an entry to reveal its contents in a preview window – from here you can copy and paste content into an email message or Google Docs document in the current window or tab, or use the links provided to open said item in its own tab or window.

Download Accelerator Plus 9.6.0.5

Inevitably there are times when a particular download takes a long time to complete. This is often because a large number of people are attempt to download the same files at the same time and these can lead to the host server becoming overloading, resulting in poor transfer performance for everyone. However, it usually occurs at a time when you're in a real hurry for the file/programme your downloading.

This is where Download Accelerator Plus comes in. The software helps to speed up downloads by searching for mirrors - duplicates of the file you are downloading - so you can download from more than one location simultaneously. By spreading the download load across multiple servers you should be able to make the most of your internet connection and download files at full speed.

Dropbox Experimental Edition v1.2.0

DropBox is an online sharing tool that enables you to select the files you want to share and synchronise with other users, then simply upload them to the remote site. That bit is done automatically, so you don't need to worry about having to upload the files manually. You can share folders and collaborate with other users on the files within these folders. Versioning will stop work being overwritten.

Hotspot Shield 1.572

If you're working on the go, then chances are you won't be using your own home or business Wi-Fi network. Instead, you're probably making use of free internet connections in airports and hotels, which could leave you open to having your personal details and log-in credentials stolen by hackers.

Hotspot Shield creates a virtual private network which in turn helps to secure your internet connection and protect personal information from potential hackers.

Your IP address is kept private making it possible to browse the internet anonymously, but the key focus is on security. The program also has a number of other benefits. By acting as a proxy, Hotspot Shield makes it possible to access parts of the internet that might otherwise be blocked. Web sites that are restricted to visitors from particular countries can be accessed regardless of where you are.
