Sony's Windows 8 convertible tablet and Ultrabook laptop

One of Sony's more interesting upcoming products is the Vaio Duo 11, a hybrid Windows 8 tablet and Ultrabook laptop. Here are our hands-on pictures.

The Duo 11 looks like a regular tablet, if a little chunky at 17.85mm but there's a reason for this which is the hidden keyboard. In a similar way to Asus' Slider tablet the screen moves on a spring loaded mechanism into an upright position revealing the keyboard. Sony calls it the Surf Slider design. This makes it really easy to switch the Duo 11 between a tablet and a laptop.

Sony has fitted the Vaio Duo 11 with an 11.6in display which has a full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution and supports up to 10 point multi-touch. You can use this with your fingers of course, or a pressure sensitive 'digitzer pen'.

The cheaper model starts at £999 and you can spec the device up to a Core i7 with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Ports are plentiful including VGA and HDMI outputs, two USB 3.0 ports, full-size ethernet and an SD card reader.

The Duo 11's backlit keyboard is packed into a small space and therefore has pretty small keys. Unfortunately there's no trackpad but the compromise is a touch sensitive trackpoint with thin mouse buttons below the keyboard.

Battery life is quoted at five hours but if this isn’t enough then you can purchase an additional battery which attaches to the underside of the device. This doubles battery life to 10 hours.
