As is the norm with Apple releases, the iPhone 5 smashed all previous sales records. However that hasn't cured the insatiable appetite of the internet to find out exactly what Apple is up to. It took just two months for the first new iPhone 5S release date rumour to rear its head. See also: iPhone 5 review.
iPhone 5S release date rumours
Interestingly the first iPhone rumour is that the next new Apple smartphone will actually be the to the iPhone 5S instead of the iPhone 6. Which suggests that like the iPhone 4 and 4S, the external design of the iPhone 5S won't differ from the iPhone 5 much if at all. The actual rumoured release date of the iPhone 5S is said to be early in 2013, with February tipped by many as the month that Apple has in mind.
Prolific rumourers, Digitimes, were the first website to suggest a reason for the early iPhone 5S release date. "Facing low yield rates in the production of iPhone 5, Apple has accelerated the certification processes for related parts and components for the iPhone 5S" said Digitimes.
A February release date for the iPhone 5S would be surprising given the iPhone 5 only launched in September, but not a completely crazy move. Releasing an iPhone 5S instead of an iPhone 6 suggests that it will only be a semi-update of the Apple smartphone.
Doing so gives Apple a fighting chance to keep its smartphone's hardware up to speed with the relentless release of Android phones. The gap of 11-months between the launch of the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5 allowed Google Android devices to gain a lot of ground on Apple, so a shorter turnaround for the iPhone 5S's release date would help Apple keep its smartphone hardware up-to-date.
