iPhone 5 launch: everything you need to know

How to follow the launch of the iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 is set to launch on Wednesday evening, and PC Advisor will bring you all the action as it happens. Here is our guide to the upcoming iPhone 5 launch. See also: iPhone 5 review.

iPhone 5 launch: when is it?

Apple has sent out invites to an event in San Francisco next Wednesday, the 12 September at 10am in San Fran, which is 6pm in the UK. There will be a simultaneous event in London.

iPhone 5 launch: how can I follow it?

We'll have reporters at both the San Francisco and London iPhone 5 launch events, live-blogging, Tweeting, and bringing you the latest photos and videos, as well as getting hands on with sixth-generation iPhone. Stay posted to PC Advisor for the latest on the iPhone 5. See also: iPhone 5 launch: live blog

iPhone 5 launch: will it be the iPhone 5?

The email invite sent out by Apple bears the message: "It's almost here". The date is represented by a large number '12' that casts a shadow in the shape of a number 5. Do the maths.

Further to that the build up to the launch has been classic Apple. A rumour here, a leaked photo there... unless Apple is about to change its phenomenally successful launch strategy by throwing everyone off the scent, we can expect to see a new iPhone next Wednesday.

iPhone 5 launch: But will it be called 'iPhone 5'

That's less easy to call. We all expected the iPad 3 to launch earlier this year, and Apple went with 'iPad'. So it's possible the sixth-generation iPhone will simply be called 'iPhone'. That said, there's that big 5 on the invite. Our guess is 'iPhone 5'.

iPhone 5 launch: what about the iPad mini?

Not this time. Expect Apple to host a different media event later in the year to unveil its pocket-sized iPad. Probably in October, possibly as a spoiler for Microsoft's Windows 8 and Surface launches on October 26.

iPhone 5 launch: what do we expect from the iPhone 5?

We've written a whole story about this one, and we could have written a book. Check out our iPhone 5 release date, specs and rumour round-up story for the full low-down. But suffice it to say that the smart money is on the new iPhone having a larger touch-screen than its predecessor. As premium Android and Windows Phone products such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Nokia Lumia 900 leech a little mindshare away from the iPhone, this product, we think, will be the next big change in iPhone design.

iPhone 5 launch: will it be popular?

Yes. Hugely so. Industry analysts are predicting a massive win for Apple, as smartphone owners hold off on their next purchase to see what the iPhone 5 is like. 'iPhone 5 release' is currently one of the most searched-for terms on the internet as it was a year ago when Apple launched the 5th-generation iPhone and called it the iPhone 4S. Also, in our ongoing poll, we ask: Do you intend to upgrade to an iPhone 5? At the time of writing, half of the more than 1,000 respondents have voted 'yes'.
