The supermarket chain has sent out invitations to a launch event next week where it is expected to announce its Hudl tablet. Tesco is thought to be taking on the budget tablet market with suggestions of a price around £129 but the firm could go under the £100. "We've got something to show you. #LetsHudl" said Tesco in its invite.

It's likely that the Tesco Hudl tablet will run on Google's Android operating system but the key question is whether it will allow access to the Play Store for apps, games, music, films and other content.

Tesco will probably pitch the tablet as a device for accessing its Blinkbox and ClubCard TV content streaming services.

A downside to tablets like Amazon's Kindle Fire range is that the Play Store is inaccessible. See also: New Amazon Kindle Fire 2 tablet leaks online.

Leaked specifications, via The British Tech Network, include a 7 in IPS screen with a 1280 x 720 resolution, 1.6 GHz quad-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot.

It will supposedly have dual cameras (3 Mp and 2 Mp respectively) and a micro HDMI port for hooking it up to a larger display like a TV. A nine hour battery life is tipped and the Hudl will come in four colour options - blue, purple, red and black.

We'll be at the Hudl launch event next week so stay tuned for all the official news, pictures and hands-on with Tesco's tablet.
