If you've used speech-recognition technology in the past then you could be forgiven for thinking it a bit of a joke. Merely setting up a profile so you could begin using the software for practical purposes took an age, and still you'd find your transcripts littered with mistakes.
This certainly used to be my attitude towards it. But this may be about to change. Last week I saw a product demonstrated that apparently needs no long, drawn-out training session to create a user profile. It can transcribe speech at a rate of up to 160 words per minute – that's faster than most secretaries could do it. And though the accuracy wasn't 100 percent – enough mistakes crept into the demonstration to make me believe it wasn't all a set-up – it was pretty good.
