More than two in five (42 percent) students are concerned that information they've posted online, on sites such as Facebook, may affect their chances of employment in the future, says the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

Research released by the ICO, which was conducted by YouGov, also revealed a third of students that have moved since starting university have not implemented a redirect for their mail, while 76 percent admit they haven't checked their credit rating in the last year. Furthermore, two thirds claimed they'd never viewed their credit history and have no idea whether their ID has been used to set-up credit cards and other financial accounts.

As a result the ICO has launched the 2011 Student Brand Ambassador Campaign which aims to improve awareness in students about the need to keep their information safe and secure.

"In tough times, young people are clearly less relaxed about privacy, particularly in relation to information that they post online - but many may not know what they can do about it," said Information Commissioner Christopher Graham.

"The Student Brand Ambassador campaign is about arming students with the advice they need to protect themselves from obvious dangers such as identity theft and keeping their social lives private. It's about empowering young people to take back control of their information and I hope the campaign is embraced by students at universities across the UK."

The research comes just a week after Fellowes revealed some four million Brits, around seven percent of the population, have been a victim of identity fraud.
