The Nikon Coolpix S9100 is a solidly built camera with a huge 18x zoom lens, and it can produce very good images. Styled like an enthusiasts’ compact, complete with a pop-up flash and stereo microphones, the S9100 is an accessible point-and-shoot. We saw pin-sharp results at extreme telephoto, while the subtle corner softening at maximum wide-angle is forgivable. Add a best-in-class focal range, and the Nikon is a winner in our book.

About the PC Advisor Awards 2012

Our annual roll call of honour considers every piece of hardware and software that has passed through our Test Centre over the past year. We look for innovation and excellence, outstanding performance and value for money.

Only excellent products make the PC Advisor Awards shortlist, and we congratulate all the manufacturers represented on the list. If a product still looks great from the view point of up to a year after its first review, the chances are that it is great.

That does, however, mean that our PC Advisor Awards coverage is not necessarily a buyer’s guide – for that you should visit our Test Centre and Reviews. Some of the products may no longer be available, and in some categories they may have been superseded.

Whittling down the shortlist to pick out individual winners isn’t easy. In all cases arguments could be (and were) made for products other than the eventual winners. But winners there must be.
